Nubian Village and Felucca Ride in Aswan

This relaxed half-day experience begins at the riverbank, where you'll board a traditional wooden felucca, one of the oldest styles of sailboat still in use on the Nile. There's no engine and no fixed schedule; the boat moves with the wind, past Elephantine Island and the botanical gardens of Kitchener's Island, with the Aga Khan Mausoleum visible on the hills above the west bank.

You'll disembark at a Nubian village, instantly recognizable by its vividly painted houses in blues, oranges, and yellows. Nubian people have lived along this stretch of the Nile for thousands of years and have their own distinct language and traditions, separate from the rest of Egypt. Many villagers welcome visitors into their homes for tea, and it's common to see crocodiles kept (safely, behind enclosures) as a nod to old Nubian traditions.

This tour is intentionally unhurried, a nice contrast to the temple-heavy pace of most Egypt itineraries, and works well as a relaxed afternoon activity.
