Short Break at Siwa Oasis & Cairo

Getting to Siwa is part of what keeps it distinct: the oasis sits roughly 750 km west of Cairo, hard against the Libyan border, reached by a private air-conditioned vehicle on a drive of around 8 to 9 hours each way through open desert. There's no railway and no scheduled flight, which is exactly why Siwa has kept its own language, its own mud-brick building style, and a slower pace than anywhere else in Egypt's Western Desert.

Four nights are spent at the Ghaliet Eco-Lodge & Spa, built in the traditional kershef style — a mix of salt-rock and palm timber unique to the oasis — with breakfast and dinner included and a 4x4 vehicle handling all local transfers. From there, the Shali Fortress rises at the center of town: a hilltop citadel of the same salt-rock construction, largely abandoned after three days of unusually heavy rain dissolved parts of it in 1926, and now explored on foot along its eroded passages. A short drive out to Aghurmi leads to the Temple of the Oracle of Amun, where Alexander the Great is recorded to have consulted the oracle in 331 BC after crossing the desert from the coast.

The trip's other landmark is the Great Sand Sea, one of the largest sand seas on earth, reached by 4x4 for dune driving, sandboarding stops, and — on clear nights — some of the darkest skies accessible on a short trip from Cairo. Three nights bookend the itinerary at a 5-star Cairo hotel, giving the long desert crossing a comfortable start and finish. Lunch is included on sightseeing days in both Siwa and Cairo, and an English-speaking guide travels with the group throughout.
