- St. Catherine Monastery and Mount Sinai Overnight Trip from Sharm El Sheikh
Climbing Mount Sinai for sunrise, then visiting one of the world's oldest working monasteries
This trip departs from Sharm El Sheikh late at night, driving inland to the base of Mount Sinai, believed by tradition to be the mountain where Moses received the Ten Commandments. From there, you'll begin a guided night hike along the camel path to the summit, a climb of a few hours that can also be done partly by camel for an additional fee.
At the top, you'll wait for sunrise alongside pilgrims and travelers from around the world, watching the surrounding mountains of the Sinai emerge in the early light, widely considered one of the most moving sunrise views in Egypt.
After descending, you'll visit St. Catherine's Monastery at the mountain's base, founded in the 6th century and still home to an active community of monks. The monastery holds a renowned library of ancient manuscripts and icons, second in significance only to the Vatican's collection, along with the traditional site of the Burning Bush. Note that only the monastery's chapel and grounds are open to general visitors; access to the library and manuscript collection is restricted.
